The tightly knit maze of colourful fishermans’ cottages
at Staithes encompassed by soaring cliffs so tall,
walking alongside a heritage railway line watching
the purple grey clouds of a distant summer squall.
The magnificent grey stone elevated arching facade of
Whitby Abbey ruins, an architectural masterpiece,
an icy winter wind blows across exposed clifftops,
overhead an elongated V of calling returning geese.
Looking out over glittering water from the towering
striped brown cliffs surrounding Robin Hood’s Bay,
the tranquil cerulean blue sea’s waves are tinted with
sparkling silver diamonds on a sunlit summer’s day.
Beached weathered colourful fishing boats painted in
primary colours wait patiently for the next ebbing tide,
an imposing curved grey stone seawall covered in
tenacious green seaweed protects the seaward side.
A white gold sunrise is painted with brush-strokes of
ephemeral pink above slumbering shadowed moorland,
transient sheep methodically graze exposed rocky ground
and sparse moorland, hills hardly touched by mans’ hand.
The arches of a Victorian viaduct reach across a wide
valley floor on a peaceful misty morning, almost quite still,
the patchwork fields of The Dales are enclosed by resilient
hand crafted dry stone walls and ancient sentinel hills.
The picturesque Shambles with overhanging timber framed
Tudor buildings and an old fashioned street name sign,
Yorkshire has a choice of windswept moorland, historical cities
and coastal scenery to be enjoyed on a day sunlit and fine.
