Pulling away from Sheringham station, a coastal panorama unfolds of
yellow gorse on an undulating golf course and silver tinted blue sea,
the metallic double clunk and ringing bell of the vintage ruby red
and black Tyler token system, issuing the single track token key.

Alongside the line, reminiscent of a Monet painting, a profusion of wild
flowering scarlet poppies embroider a field of ripening golden wheat,
a B12 locomotive in LNER apple green waits for the uniformed guard
to blow the ‘all aboard’ whistle, radiating a shimmering wave of heat.

The neat columns of small bold black print advertising hourly arrival and
departure times of steam trains on the yellowing Victorian timetable,
attached with knotted cream string on the handle of a chestnut brown
old fashioned leather suitcase, a handwritten cursive address label.

Glamorous Art Deco railway posters advertise national holiday locations
during the Golden Age Of Steam, the style and colours vibrant and bold,
passing through heathland, a locomotive discharges billowing clouds of
white grey smoke which faithfully follows the train on a day frosty and cold.

The Black Prince 9F stationary at horizontal red and white track signals
waiting patiently to proceed, striking and workmanlike in glossy black,
the nostalgic sound of a musical steam driven whistle carried on transient
light south westerly wind travels a mile down the curving narrow track.

The rich golden brown wooden elegance of four meticulously restored
Gresley Quad-Art railway carriages, pure decadence class,
encased in an original LNER emerald green and cream multi-paned
signal box, long levers for track and signals tipped with polished brass.

The footbridge at The Poppy Line’s beautifully preserved station at
Weybourne offers glorious views of windmill, railway track and sea,
on a summer’s day at a steam gala watching visiting trains surrounded
with the evocative smell of coal smoke, the perfect place to be.
