Sea lavender’s amethyst purple flowers decorate a coastal
marsh landscape untamed, flat and wide,
high on Holkham’s rippled sandy beach, tubular iridescent
tubular razor shells left by the previous high tide,
the transformation of salt marsh’s muted colours to rich
green and warm gold by diffused sun’s rays,
the echoing calls of elongated waves of Pink-Footed geese
taking flight at dawn on a cold frosty winter’s day.
Well’s personalised beach huts patiently wait for a passing
landscape artist in a curving decorative row,
the transient white luminescence of a windswept deserted
winter beach after a recent dusting of snow,
reminiscent of a Monet painting, scarlet red flowering poppies
embroider a field of ripening golden wheat,
the silver grey line on the distant shadowed horizon clearly
shows where wide coastal skies and sea meet.
A freshening wind creates the metallic melody of dinghies’
metal rigging clinking against hollow silver masts,
resting on pebbled beach, weathered crab boats painted in navy
and white, a reminder of the coast’s fishing past,
ceaseless wind and waves sculpt Blakeney’s shingle spit and
silted islands, surrounded by sea of cerulean blue,
the coastal colour palette subtly altering as light and shadows
transpose as transitory cumulus clouds pass through.
A row of fishermens’ cottages in Cromer are built with grey sea
smoothed cobbles collected on nearby beach,
towering undulating clifftops reveal an abundance of wild glossy
blackberries, just out of hand’s reach,
with ever-changing light and coastline, the hypnotic ebb and
flow of the tides, this area you loved so dear,
when I think of or look at North Norfolk, so full of natural beauty,
this brings you ever closer, brings you ever near.
Beloved Wife Jane Farthing 1929 – 2017
A poem can express innermost emotions after the loss of a loved one or friend.
My poetry is written to be gently uplifting and evocative, reminding the reader or listeners of the loved one or friend’s love of The North Norfolk Coast.
My poems have been very well received at both church and crematorium services, adding a very personal accolade.
