The Lake District

Wandering to unknown destinations, white cumulus clouds
glide silently above on a sky of pure cornflower blue,
the landscape’s sheltered valleys sculpted by monumental
glaciers, barely changed in the millennia old view.

In late April, flowering in undisturbed woodland the gentle
fragrance and tranquility of native bluebells,
the timeless plaintive chorus of mothers and lambs calling
carried by light transient wind from a distant fell.

In the sheltered lea of a grey moss covered rock, a cluster
of alpine saxifrage flowers in delicate candy floss pink,
towering indigo craggy peaks are silhouetted with antique
gold tapering rays as an evening sun slowly sinks.

A prodigious pillar supports a disused quarry’s vaulted
cathedral ceiling created by mined copper rich stone,
stalwart native black Fell ponies have grazed high hill land
for numerable centuries, the low fells their home.

The tumultuous roar of a torrent of tumbling crystal spring
water hitting black rocks from a nearby waterfall,
in slumbering autumn, the perennial reverberating echo around
silent sweeping fells as a territorial deer stag calls.

Scarfell Pike’s shadowed peak clearly visible against cloudless
blue sky, the crown covered with pristine snow,
a stark outcrop adorned with a luxurious carpet of heather’s
purple flowers overlooks white cottages far below.

A smooth obsidian lake reflects a reverse image of colourful
autumnal bracken fronds encompassed by sentinel hills,
rocky crags and verdant valleys engender a deep appreciation
of nature, that the beauty of this landscape instills.
