The Joy of Cats

Playing in freshly raked pyramid of frost tinted autumnal
leaves of green, burnished copper and gold,
feline fur fragrant with the snowy scent of icy winter air
after coming inside from the cold,
the ‘tick tick’ warning call of a diminutive scolding wren
perfectly hidden in a tall mature privet hedge,
innately curious, walking without a care along a high

narrow slate tiled rooftop ledge.

From a nearby treetop emanates a robin’s pure melodic
solo on a tranquil misty spring morn,
the unhurried luminescence of a white gold sunrise above
dark horizon as the ebony night becomes dawn,
laying on luxuriant summer lawn watching peacock
butterflies, a colourful profusion of fluttering wings,
feeding upon the sweet dust of summer nectar that
Buddleia’s abundant white flowers bring.

Cautiously exploring, the garden’s familiar landscape
transformed by an overnight dusting of snow,
that evening hosts a stunning grey and obsidian sunset
tinted with a fleeting vibrant pink glow,
the enjoyment of a flaming coal fire lulls you into paw and
tail twitching sleep on a cold January day,
sitting expectantly near a strand of discarded Christmas
gold tinsel, mischievous eyes asking you to play.

The dancing random flight of diaphanous moths catches
the eye in the deepening shadows of twilight,
a motionless silhouette listening intently to field mice in
long summer grass, always a timeless sight,
moving like a feline compass following the sun’s warmth
around the house on it’s journey across the sky,
a cats beauty, company, independence and the pleasurable
sound of a purr, always a pleasure to have nearby.

Beloved Wife   Jane Farthing 1929 -2017

A poem can express innermost emotions after the loss of a loved one or friend.
My poetry is written to be gently uplifting and evocative, reminding the reader or listeners of the loved one or friend’s love of cats.
My poems have been very well received at both church and crematorium services, adding a very personal accolade.
