The rich fragrance of wild yellow honeysuckle interwoven
with a prickly hedge of blackthorn,
a melodic blackbird initiates the celebratory chorus that
announces the arrival of a breaking dawn,
a prodigious dust-tinted orange harvest moon rises above
the shadowed horizon many miles away,
ephemeral red admiral and peacock butterflies alight to feed
on flowers’ nectar released by golden sun’s rays.
The overnight emergence of a colourful red and white spotted
toadstool with it’s fluted skirt of white frills,
an abundance of burnished brown conkers lay encased in spiky
green husks on a nebulous morn, calm and still,
a luxurious carpet of fallen leaves in russet red, amber and
green are painted with frost’s crystalline white,
adjacent and distant tawny owls call under the glittering
starlit canopy of an ebony velvet winter’s night.
Sculpted clifftops overlook an icy windswept beach embellished
with a transient dusting of pristine snow,
adjoining the tempestuous pewter sea with white horses riding
the crests of waves that seethe and flow,
after patiently standing sentinel for many centuries, an ancient
yew tree succumbs to turbulent winter gales,
against a backdrop of leaden clouds, a flock of calling Pink-Footed
Geese fly overhead creating a vacillating V shaped trail.
The drumming of a territorial scarlet, black and white woodpecker
can be heard echoing on a tranquil misty morn,
below trees unfurling with chartreuse leaves, the welcome colour
of yellow daffodils adorn an awakening spring lawn,
the petals of pink and white crab apple blossom with a delicate
almond scent decorate a wise old gnarled tree,
you are always there surrounding me in the beauty of nature’s seasons,
I only have to take a moment, open my eyes and see.
Beloved Mum and Grandma Eileen Bond 1927 – 2018
A poem can express innermost emotions after the loss of a loved one or friend.
My poetry is written to be gently uplifting and evocative, reminding the reader or listeners of the loved one or friend’s joy of nature and how they enjoyed the changing seasons throughout the year. Also, how a calendar year represents the “seasons’ of our lives.
My poems have been very well received at both church and crematorium services, adding a very personal accolade.
