Steam Trains

A B12 locomotive patiently waits at horizontal red and white signals, impressive in
  glossy black,
the distinctive sound of a musical steam whistle carried on light wind travels a mile
 down the track,
reminiscent of a Monet painting, scarlet red flowering poppies embroider a field of
 ripening wheat,
a locomotive dressed in apple green waits in the station for the signal to rise, radiating
a shimmering wave of heat.

The striped coffee brown and vintage cream livery of luxurious Pullman carriages, pure
decadence class,
encased in a trackside’s emerald green and cream signal box, long levers tipped with highly
polished brass,
the symmetry of the criss cross diamond design above the curving arch of a decorative
wrought iron bridge,
a bold red and white ‘STOP’ sign among a carpet of rich purple heather on a windswept
moorland ridge.

The neat columns of bold black print advertising arrivals and departures of the yellowing
Victorian timetable,
sitting on the platform, an old fashioned brown leather suitcase has a handwritten cursive
luggage label,
glamorous Art Deco railway posters display national holiday locations printed in colours
vibrant and bold,
a black chimney discharges billowing clouds of white smoke which follows the train on a

   day frosty and cold.

The graceful artistry of a railway viaduct’s soaring obsidian brick arches crossing a wide
undulating river valley,
the metallic double clunk of the red and black Tyler token system issuing the single line
 track token key,
the evocative smell of coal smoke, the ‘chuff ‘ as a train pulls away from the station,
all that you loved so dear,
whenever I see the splendour of a steam train making it’s way along the track,
this brings you ever closer, brings you ever near.

In loving memory of James Farthing 1929 -2017

Poppyland Poet

(If the site menu isn’t displayed at the top of the page, please use the link at the bottom of each page.)

A poem can express innermost emotions after the loss of a loved one or friend.

My poetry is written to be gently uplifting and evocative, reminding the reader or listeners of the loved one or friend’s love of steam trains.

My poems have been very well recieved at both church and crematorium services, adding a very personal accolade.
