The distinctive striped awnings of the bustling weekend
market stalls selling all manner of goods,
the summer flowering gardens, secluded tearooms and
winding hilly trails in a dappled hilltop wood,
on a beach gangway lay wooden crab pots, rope and
weathered fishing boats in scarlet, navy and white,
the tapering golden rays of an autumnal setting sun highlight
tranquil mirrored sea in gentle evening twilight.
The Poppy Line has a green and cream signal box with the
railway station’s matching canopy nearby,
a vintage steam whistle sounds and a train pulls under the
bridge billowing smoke clouds into clear blue sky,
the traditional wooden criss cross railway fence where
mainline meets preserved and the nostalgia of steam,
an undulating clifftop golf course with worn sandy paths lined
by golden gorse leading to manicured greens.
Sheringham Park has towering mature woodland and an elegant
folly with distant windmill and sea views,
leaf cushioned paths meander through rhododendron and azalea
blooms in every colour, shade and hue,
during summer’s busy carnival week, swags of vibrant bunting
line the length of the coastal main street,
a thriving little theatre and decorative clock tower wait at a
busy junction where two roads meet.
The inshore lifeboat’s slipway reaches across rounded grey cobbles
surrounded by a beach of pebbles and golden sand,
a picturesque row of beach huts overlook large rocks protecting
the promenade where sea meets the land,
a curving sea wall with picturesque murals, the ever-changing
tides and skies, this town you loved so dear,
walking along the promenade in beautiful sunshine or a blustery
winter gale, brings you ever closer, brings you ever near.
Beloved Father James Farthing 1929 – 2017
A poem can express innermost emotions after the loss of a loved one or friend.
My poetry is written to be gently uplifting and evocative, reminding the reader or listeners of the loved one or friend’s love of Sheringham.
My poems have been very well received at both church and crematorium services, adding a very personal accolade.
