Approaching a brightly coloured marker buoy, the empty wind
-less sail momentarily flapping before taking a homeward turn,
the boat’s displacement of surface water creates a white
expanding rippling fluid V to fan out from the boat’s stern.
The liquid colour and mood of the restless water is always in
perpetual flux, transposing from pewter grey to cerulean blue,
a mirror image of the itinerant sky is shown as it momentarily
illuminates as sporadic cumulus clouds and sun pass through.
In a stiff south westerly breeze, maintaining the speeding boat’s
balance and equilibrium by leaning in harness far over the side,
bright sunlight creates glittering wave tipped diamonds on the
water’s cool rippled surface as over it the boat silently glides.
Tacking as the transient wind changes direction, swinging the
dinghy’s silver aluminium boom and sail from port to starboard,
a slumbering autumnal marina is softened by dawn’s nebulous
white ephemeral mist, orderly rows of resting boats moored.
Ominous mauve rain clouds billow mountainously far above the
distant shadowed horizon causing the wind’s speed to rise,
the unexpected summer storm requires quick efficient reefing
of the straining main and fore sail, carefully fastening the ties.
In a gentle summer breeze enjoying the unique encompassing silence
that accompanies sailing, hearing the wind and water flowing by,
flocks of Black-Headed gulls gliding in warm air thermals survey
nomadic tranquil sea far below, effortlessly circling so high.
The setting sun’s golden orb is painted with bold brushstrokes of
ephemeral pink as it slowly sinks into calm indigo sea,
sailing on smooth water with a brisk breeze, feeling the wind
and warm sun on your face, always the perfect place to be.
