Nestled between gentle hills, woodland and sea, this fishing village retains an olde
  world charm,
the scarlet red poppies for which the area was renown, embroider the field verge of
   a nearby farm,
a sentinel clock tower watches over The Londs, walls made of stones smoothed by the
 rolling action of the sea,
near the clifftop boat shed lay wooden crab pots with twisted green rope while fishing
 boats wait patiently.

A row of summer beach huts in bright colours line the promenade watching the waves’
  ebb and flow,
a transient dusting of white snow lightly rests on golden windswept sand transforming
 with a luminous glow,
a tempestuous winter sea pounds the sea wall covering the grey walkway with a cascade
 of foamy spray,
the restless water changing from deep indigo to azure blue as cumulus clouds pass on a
sunlit summer’s day.

A skylark’s song floats above the flagsticks and sculpted greens of the midway point of an
immaculate golf course,
a coastal walk along towering clifftops, the sculpted cliff edge softened with rich yellow
  flowering gorse,
excited children with buckets and spades build turreted sandcastles in dry sand left by the
 receding tide,
wild pink roses flower near silver railings overlooking curving pristine beaches, perfectly
 smooth and wide.

Opposite the cobbled church, cherry trees bestow pink tissue paper confetti onto a curving
  path of grey,
the distant revolving beam of a hexagonal lighthouse lights black velvet sky at the starlit
end of each day,
with beautiful coastal scenery, Edwardian houses, ever-changing light and tides,
this village you loved so dear,
when walking along the beach under cornflower blue skies or a brisk winter gale,
this brings you ever closer, brings you ever near.

In loving memory of James Farthing 1929 – 2017

Poppyland Poet

(If the site menu isn’t displayed at the top of the page, please use the link at the bottom of each page.)

A poem can express innermost emotions after the loss of a loved one or friend.

My poetry is written to be gently uplifting and evocative, reminding the reader or listeners of the loved one or friend’s love of Overstrand.

My poems have been very well recieved at both church and crematorium services, adding a very personal accolade.
