Heading off to primary school then secondary or grammar, at
break time in the playground laughing, having fun,
a grandma is first a little girl, child, teenager and then young
adult, long before becoming a mum.
A lifetime of marriage and children imparts experience and
knowledge, leading to a wealth of respected wisdom,
sharing treasured stories of family history, humorous anecdotes
and memories about great grandad and mum.
Chuck Berry’s lively rock and roll then the contemporary
sound of the Beatles, also known as The Fab Four,
listening on a Sunday evening to the Top 20 on a pocket sized
silver transistor radio, wishing there was more.
Wearing a fashionable white mini dress in a modern geometric
patten with knee high shiny black patent boots,
going to a local dance on a scooter with a Mod wearing desert
boots and a green Parka, underneath a smart suit.
Watching the rented television, the v shaped aerial and different
sized dials with a small screen in silver grey,
going to a park with an audio tape recorder after saving your
favourite songs then enjoying hearing them play.
Walking around a local Woolworths at the weekend with a friend,
to buy a lipstick that matches your new coat,
talking about the new pirate radio station in the news that comes
from the North Sea, the DJs aboard a large boat.
As a small child you taught me to tie my laces, picked me up and
gave me a gentle hug when I fell down,
answered hundreds of questions with patient answers and
sunshine in your smile, never the slightest frown.
The special maternal all encompassing love built on a lifetime of
giving and caring, which we all shared,
we are honoured to have had such a wonderful much loved
mum and grandma for whom we deeply cared.
This poem can be altered to just mum and also from we to I.
A poem can express innermost emotions after the loss of a loved one.
My poetry is written to be gently uplifting and evocative, celebrating the loved one’s life, marriage, children and grand children.
My poems have been very well received at both church and crematorium services, by funeral directors and add a very personal accolade.
