Cromer

At the bottom of the sloping gangway, weathered navy and
white crab boats rest side by side,
colourful beach huts in every shade of blue watch the hypnotic
ebb and flow of the restless tide,
an elegant curve of Georgian houses above an impressive
cobbled wall with northerly sea views,
transient cumulus clouds and sunlight transform the water’s
colour from pewter grey to cerulean blue.

The Victorian pier’s wide wooden boards allow the sight and
sound of waves swirling under your feet,
a park shelter’s arched windows reveal sweeping panoramic
views and a comfortable wooden seat,
a narrow street houses a row of fishermens’ cottages made
of sea smoothed rounded grey stone,
embroidering a golden summer wheat field, the wild scarlet
red poppies for which this area was renown.

A lighthouse watches over a green valley with a sandy beach
path, steep cliffside steps leading down,
silver painted pole railings line the wide scenic sloping clifftop
walkways leading to the main town,
the pier and modern lifeboat station are obsidian silhouettes
against a twilight sunset of metallic gold,
the deserted winter beach sculpted into ripples by a receding
tide on a day with a brisk wind and cold.

The distinctive sound of a golf club hitting a hard ball comes
from an immaculate royal golf course,
with spectacular towering clifftop views and decorated in
summer with rich golden flowering gorse,
with wide skies and golden beaches, ever-changing light and
tides, all that you loved so dear,
when I think of or look at Cromer, it’s coastline full of natural
beauty, this brings you closer, brings you ever near.

Beloved Father  James Farthing 1929 – 2017

A poem can express innermost emotions after the loss of a loved one or friend.
My poetry is written to be gently uplifting and evocative, reminding the reader or listeners of the loved one or friend’s love of Cromer.
My poems have been very well recieved at both church and crematorium services, adding a very personal accolade.
