A sturdy khaki seat tackle box contains an assortment of
multicoloured fishing beads, hooks, swivels and fresh bait,
on a calm hushed day with nebulous smoke white mist lightly
resting on the shadowed water, the tranquil scene captivates.
Still Fishing a sunlit glittering meandering river in summer
with the cast slender rod resting and keep net to the side,
candescent morning sunlight tints the river’s dark obsidian
water with silver ripples as to destinations unknown it glides.
The elegant arching of the rod and the clean whipping sound
of the translucent line as it soars past high overhead,
before gracefully landing on the water’s surface and being
carried in the swirling currents of the wide shallow river bed.
Standing in a mountain fed pellucid gently flowing stream in
tall olive green waders and muted patterned tweeds,
an intimate knowledge of the fish, local area, good weather and
fly fishing expertise are required if you are to succeed.
The distinctive whirring sound of the reel’s circular metal
spool discharging when casting into turbulent grey sea,
standing in a sloping sandy beach’s receding drying wave
shallows, the slowly ebbing tidal water dictating where to be.
Northerly winds with the icy metallic scent of forthcoming
snow blow undisturbed across a deserted winter beach,
the only other inhabitants monochrome oystercatchers call
as they fly in the strong winds seemingly just out of reach.
Fishing has the ability to slow life down, allowing time to think
and relax while enjoying the still silence of a spring morn,
the perfect place to be with the golden orb of sunrise appearing
above the ebony horizon lighting the day, just before dawn.
