The colourful striped roofs of the market stalls with wicker and
cheese, the jams and cakes homemade,
the town square is inlaid with bronze coloured blocks of lettering,
it’s printing past proudly displayed,
a side street leads to a grand house hidden behind tall cobbled
walls with a tranquil river view,
the skilled craft of blowing heated glass produces delicate
ornaments with a crystal glass hue.
The oval undulating racecourse has a steep uphill finish to the
circular winning post of red and white,
the roar of the excited crowd as racing horses jump the birch
fences in winter’s fading afternoon light,
a flooded former quarry has colourful gardens, walkways and
exotic bird-filled lakes with sweeping curves,
a fleeting electric blue glimpse of a kingfisher from the riverside
path that flows alongside the wildfowl reserve.
The grand facade of a Victorian corn exchange now screens films
and stands on a brick island on it’s own,
a concrete buffer signals a thriving bygone railway line where a
selection of flowers and plants are now grown,
the unusual curved shape of two solitary shops opposite a former
family store rebuilt after a damaging blaze,
a car park’s red brick octagonal hut used to collect tariffs from a
cattle auction on bustling market days.
Water cascades over a weir before sedately resting in the mill
pond under willow tree in summer’s rich green,
from the top stories of the large multi storied water mill, the
shops and buildings of the town can be seen,
with an eclectic mix of buildings and shops, a mixture of the old
and new, this town you loved so dear,
walking along winding streets on days with a thriving farmer’s
market, brings you ever closer, brings you ever near.

A poem can express innermost emotions after the loss of a loved one or friend.
My poetry is written to be gently uplifting and evocative reminding the reader or listeners of the loved one or friend’s love of Fakenham.
My poems have been very well received at both church and crematorium services, adding a very personal accolade.
