The Joy of Dogs – funeral version

In an icy cold Northerly wind, individual grains of crystalline yellow sand roll,
 along a deserted winter beach,
solitary shadowesd foot and pawprint indentations following, only the furthest,
white edged waves of high tide will reach,
walking through evergreen conifer woodland on a sprung carpet of golden needles,
results in a treasured fir cone prize,
a barn owl serenely watching from it’s hidden roost in a hollowed oak tree,
 it’s imperious expression so wise

Nestled in a blackthorn hedge, the rich perfume of wild yellow honeysuckle,
floats on tranquil evening air,
stretched out in front of a warming coal fire, paws twitching in deep sleep,
that moment without a care,
climbing up a well worn sandy path to the crest of a steep undulating hill,
the reward a wide panoramic view,
then resting on a towering emerald clifftop beneath a pellucid summer sky,
of purest quintessential cornflower blue.

A springtime stroll alongside burgeoning fields with equidistant flowing lines,
of chartreuse patchwork green,
a setting sun highlights woodland leaves of russet red, amber and copper,
a vibrant autumnal scene,
laying in tall lissom summer meadow grass with a profusion of wild flowers,
watching choreographed swallows flying at height,
hearing bumble bees going from flower to flower collecting sweet nectar,
in seemingly random flight.

Encircled by a carpet of flowering bluebells’ delicate colour and fragrance,
on a springtime woodland walk,
steep wide wooden steps surrounded by spiky sage green marram sea grass,
lead to a lightly sand-dusted boardwalk,
a spiked lime green husk nestled among a marbled polychromatic leaf carpet,
encases a conker’s deep polished brown,
a dog has an innate joy of life, recognised for it’s intelligence, bravery, loyalty,
and the friendship for which it is renowned.

A much loved husband and father, James Farthing 1949 – 2018

A poem can express innermost emotions after the loss of a loved one or friend.

My poetry is written to be gently uplifting and evocative, reminding the reader or listeners of the loved one or friend’s love of dogs.

My poems have been very well recieved at both church and crematorium services, adding a very personal accolade.
