A mesmerising fluid cloud murmuration of starlings, an
ethereal performance in deepening winter twilight,
increased safety in numbers, seeking a sheltered roost
for the approaching cool ebony velvet night.
The distant sound of calling Canada geese heading inland
as they fly in a vacillating elongated V overhead,
the loud territorial booming call of a camouflaged rare
bittern echoes from a whispering marshland reed bed.
The array of wet and dry habitats and windswept pebbled
beach at Titchwell’s RSPB coastal reserve,
a managed salt and freshwater wetland designed to suit
the differing needs of the birds and wildlife it serves.
The marsh harriers’s elaborate springtime tumbling courtship
switchback display, avian choreography so high,
gently alighting on the luxuriant mauve carpet of flowering
sea lavender, the ephemeral tortoiseshell butterfly.
Smooth dark silted water is embellished with concentric
ripples created by singular crystal droplets of rain,
the lonely transient call of the speckled curlew with a
curved beak echoes along a deserted beach plain.
A prodigious flock of calling and squeaking geese leave
the shadowed marsh as one to feed at first light,
the muted rhythmical beat of their patterned wing feathers
flapping overhead silently conveys their flight.
A kaleidoscopic range of native and migrant birds species,
colours and songs, changing with each season of the year,
the joy of birdwatching is becoming part of the surrounding
landscape, with wildlife and birds so near .
