Twice daily flocks of wading redshanks, godwits and sandpipers patiently wait,
for the tidal water to recede,
the slowly ebbing water reveals pristine mud filled with snails and crustaceans,
allowing a wide variety of birds to feed,
the characteristic elongated neck flight position of migrant bewick swans arriving,
after flying long distances west,
against a pewter grey stormy billowing sky, a veritable flowing white cape of knots,
leaving their shoreline rest.
Smooth dark silted water is embellished with ascending concentric ripples created,
by singular crystal droplets of rain,
the lonely transient call of the speckled curlew with a characteristic curved beak,
echoes along a deserted beach plain,
a prodigious flock of calling and squeaking geese leave overnight roosts as one,
to feed at first light,
the muted rhythmical whisper of their hollow wing feathers flapping overhead,
silently convey their flight.
The marsh harriers’s springtime elaborate tumbling courtship switchback display,
avian acrobatics so high,
gently alighting on the luxurious mauve carpet of flowering sea lavender,
the vivid tortoiseshell butterfly,
the landscape artist’s muted palette of slate grey, muddy browns and greens,
of the flat wetland marsh,
the familiar landscape perfectly transformed by a tempestuous snow storm,
the northerly wind cold and harsh.
The accomplished flight of monochrome swallows, diligently skimming low ground,
after innumerable flies,
the progressive crescendo of sunlight and song as birds and wildlife awaken,
shortly before sunrise,
with the wind and sun on your face, appreciating the special silence of birdwatching,
an interest you loved so dear,
whenever I hear winter geese flying overhead, or a robin’s pellucid eloquent melody,
this brings you ever closer, brings you ever near.
A much loved husband and father, James Farthing 1949 – 20
