Modern and traditional paintings come in many styles, Realism, Abstract,
vibrant Art Deco and the pastel romantic Impressionism of Monet,
old masters and new such as Constable,Van Gogh and Picasso’s colourful
Cubism soon catch the eye in The National Gallery when on display.
The drawing or painting media can vary from acrylic paint and tubes and
blocks of watercolour to charcoal, pencils and pigments mixed with oil,
stretching new white canvas over a large wooden frame and priming with
gesso, creating a painting then adding subtle texture with gold leaf foil.
Planning the composition of a seascape, sketching the fine contour lines
in pencil of the sea and sky after taking the easel and paints outside,
using a colour wash for the background then creating movement, detail
and colour with the evening sunlight tinting the receding cerulean tide.
A damp sable round tip brush picks up the watercolour base from the
vibrant block of colour then requires cleaning in a water filled glass jar,
mixing the colours in shallow white pans to achieve the correct shade,
checking that the perspective is correct, adjusting for near and far.
Sitting patiently upon hexagonal pieces of blonde wood honeycomb
waiting for a clover flower, a three toned beautifully carved bumble bee,
talented sculptors past and present have left a wealth of aesthetic
sculptures, exquisite carvings and figures to revere, touch and see.
Using upcycled pieces of metal and heat to fabricate a running wild
hare results in a stunning modern copper coloured life like design,
a high level of metalworking skill and an artist’s eye is required to
sculpt a life sized polished silver horse with flowing elegant lines.
Using a potter’s wheel produces a delicate rimmed rose bowl with a
colourful kiln fired blue glaze painted on the moulded decorated clay,
whether visiting an exhibition at a national museum or local gallery, or
enjoying creating your own, art captivates us with such beauty every day.
