Heading off to primary school, at break time in the
playground playing hopscotch, laughing, having fun,
a mother and grandma is first a little girl, child, teenager and
then young adult, long before becoming a mum.

A lifetime of marriage and children imparts experience and
knowledge, leading to a wealth of respected wisdom,
sharing treasured stories of family history, humorous
anecdotes and memories about great grandad and mum,

The sound of the milkman’s horse and cart filled with silver
milk churns echoes along the street early each morn,
the baker’s shop window with domed loaves, tempting cakes,
the smell of warm yeasty bread emanating soon after dawn.

Wearing a sweetheart neck blue polka dot swing dress and
Pill box hat with feathers, to a Saturday night dance,
the wooden wireless with a lit numerical dial and decorative
speaker, plays the same songs, purely by chance.

Bing Crosby’s smooth dulcet tones play alongside the
swinging upbeat songs of Glenn Miller’s big band sound,
the quality far superior to the wind up gramophone with it’s
crackling records, the speaker horn petal-shaped and round.

Pillar box red telephone boxes stand sentry at street corners and
under shady trees, lined up against linear brick walls,
the whirring of the black telephones silver numbered dial, a moments
silence, then ringing as the exchange operator connects your call.

Cleaning out the ash, filling with coal and lighting the kitchen’s
black range for cooking is the first job of the day,
after arriving home from school and work, eating the meal as a
family, washing up then the children going out to play.

On Monday’s heating the copper, using a Dolly tub, hard soap and
winding the mangle gets the washing dry and clean,
high above plugged in the single light socket, the wire of the modern
electric iron with it’s silver metallic gleam.

In a busy city trams follow their silver rails and an open topped
bus passes with an elegant spiral staircase to the rear,
working men in wool flat caps and professionals in pinstriped suits
and bowler hats walk to jobs distant and near,

The special maternal all encompassing love built on a lifetime
of giving and caring, which we all share,
we are honoured to have such a wonderful much loved
mum and grandma, for whom we deeply care.
